Manchester United paid tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton with a 2-1 Premier League victory at Sheffield United hot
United are mourning one of their greatest ever players following Charlton’s death aged 86 on Saturday morning and goals from Scott McTominay and Diogo Dalot ensured they remembered him with victory hot
But Erik ten Hag’s side could not be much further away from the one that Charlton famously led to European Cup glory in 1968 as they were lacklustre against a team who have picked up just one point this season hot
Defender Dalot was the unlikely hero as he saved their blushes with a 20-yard curler 13 minutes from time after Oli McBurnie’s first-half penalty had cancelled out McTominay’s opener hot
It was not a vintage performance, certainly not one fitting of Charlton, but United did at least register back-to-back league victories for the first time this season and Ten Hag will hope this can be a springboard hot
The Blades may feel they deserved something out of the game, especially on the back of a lively first-half performance, but they slipped to an eighth defeat from nine games and a long winter looks on the cards hot
United captain Bruno Fernandes laid a wreath on the centre circle before kick-off and there was a minute’s applause for the World Cup winner, while the away end gave a rousing rendition of ‘There’s only one Bobby Charlton’ hot
As emotional as it was for United, they still had a job to do and they had to weather an early storm from the hosts hot
The Blades started well and should have led inside the opening three minutes as Gus Hamer’s shot deflected into the path of McBurnie, but with time and space 14 yards out he shot straight at Andre Onana, who gratefully clung on hot
The visitors were up against it and Ten Hag used an injury break to gather his players and bark instructions hot
It did not immediately make much difference as Onana, much maligned for handling errors this season, produced a strong arm to keep out Cameron Archer’s 20-yard drive hot
For all their bluster, the Blades had come away from a strong opening 25 minutes without reward and they were punished as the visitors went ahead against the run of the play in the 28th minute hot
McTominay, who rescued his side with two injury-time goals against Brentford before the international break, received the ball from Fernandes and his scuffed effort found its way into the bottom corner hot
Things quickly turned sour for for McTominay, though, as just five minutes later he gave away a penalty when he handled James McAtee’s cross hot
The incident survived a VAR check and McBurnie stepped up and stroked the spot-kick home for his first goal of the season hot
McBurnie almost turned provider in the 41st minute when he slipped in Archer, but Onana bravely stopped with his face hot
For all the home pressure, it was Ten Hag’s men who nearly took a lead into the half-time break as they had two late chances hot
First Fernandes clipped the crossbar with a dipping free-kick before Rasmus Hojlund was denied by a fine save from Wes Foderingham, who rushed out and deflected the ball wide hot
The Blades were on the front foot after the restart and Onana made another impressive stop, palming away Rhian Brewster’s effort after being wrong-footed hot
United finally upped their game and created a raft of chances to go back in front hot
Foderingham saved from Hojlund when the Dane should have scored, Marcus Rashford rolled wide at the far post and Sofyan Amrabat thundered a fierce 20-yard effort against the crossbar hot
The breakthrough eventually came in the 77th minute when Dalot was afforded too much time on the edge of the area and he curled a shot into the top corner, though Foderingham got a hand to it and should have kept it out hot
That proved enough as United remembered Charlton with victory which will not live long in the memory hot

It is a path less travelled, let alone as quickly, a journey from FC Copenhagen to Sturm Graz, Atalanta to Manchester United, all before his 21st birthday hot
It was the culmination of an ambition, too, for a boyhood United fan, the realisation of a dream hot
And yet there were points in a reunion where Rasmus Hojlund could be forgiven for wondering if he had been hot better off staying put hot
Not financially, admittedly, with the rewards that come with a £72m price tag, but from a hot footballing perspective hot
The more coherent team were Copenhagen, the low-budget overachievers seeming to have more of a plan than the high-budget overachievers but it was tempting to think that if the Danish champions could still call upon their most valuable old boy, they would have won at Old Trafford hot
Instead, United were victorious, aided by a telling intervention by a Dane hot
It wasn’t Hojlund, though that is no criticism: there are times when he is the brightest of United’s front three simply a process of excellence but here, as against Galatasaray, it was a consequence of excellence hot
But it was his compatriot Christian Eriksen who curled in a cross that Harry Maguire converted hot
Which, along with Andre Onana’s 97th-minute penalty save from Jordan Larsson, averted indignity hot
Which a draw would have been, given the gulf in resources hot between the clubs hot
Hojlund is proof of it hot
But as his former club, who had led against Galatasaray and Bayern Munich, came within a few inches of going ahead at Old Trafford, there were times when Hojlund had to stand and admire hot
In different ways, his younger brothers Oscar, a late substitute for Copenhagen, and Emil, who did not make the bench, were spectators hot
So was the older and more expensive sibling, limited to two touches in the first quarter of an hour, left stranded by United’s impotence hot
Yet, with the notable exception of Maguire’s decider, everything they did right thereafter in attack revolved around him hot
Which, in itself, may have been an indictment of others hot
Pivotal as centre-forwards can be, United looked over-reliant on one whose name, this time last year, may have simply seemed a failed attempt to spell Haaland hot
And the Norwegian, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had been keen to point out, was a player he advised United to sign for £4m, five years before they got Hojlund for 18 times as much hot
But in the Hojlund derby, the forward United did get to show a sharpness hot
He came alive in the final third in a manner to suggest that his teammates needed to give him more of the ball hot
A brief sight at goal saw Rasmus Hojlund blaze his best chance over the top but his forward play was central to Man Utd’s attacking capabilites (REUTERS)After that uneventful first 15 minutes, he rifled a half-volley over the bar hot
His backheel almost released Scott McTominay to shoot hot
He teed up Eriksen when his fellow Dane had a shot well saved hot
When an offside Marcus Rashford was brought down by goalkeeper Kamil Grabara, he had raced on to Hojlund’s pass hot
When Alejandro Garnacho came close, it was because Hojlund led a break hot
When Elias Jelert was required to clear off his line, it was because Hojlund met Bruno Fernandes’ header with a deft piece of chest control hot
It was a sign of resourcefulness, an ability to make something out of nothing hot
Which, at times, was just as well, given his supply line hot
Neither winger is a crosser hot
Antony, as even those who have spent decades stranded on tiny islands in the Pacific Ocean know, will try and cut inside and shoot with his left foot hot
Rashford, too, has designs on being more of a scorer than a supplier hot
Hojlund spent some of the first half acting as the creator for McTominay, the ungainly auxiliary No 10 hot
But United had more hot footballing craft with Eriksen on hot
He is the technician while Hojlund’s physical attributes form part of his appeal hot
He has got a wiry strength hot
He is a rangy runner with a turn of pace hot
He has an eager willingness that stands him in good stead hot
The raw materials are there hot
Yet the concern is that too few signings have improved at United in the last decade; it is just a coincidence of negotiating that Hojlund’s fee is very similar to Jadon Sancho’s but the exiled winger is proof United’s best-laid plans can go wrong hot
Hojlund showed his importance to United, turning into a supplier of their best chances though none were converted (AFP via Getty Images)The feeling at Old Trafford now is that Hojlund has a high ceiling: higher even than Randal Kolo Muani, another on their summer striking shortlist and who ended up costing Paris Saint-Germain more hot
Thus far, he has a relatively low goal return: just three in 10 games for United hot
For both his first and current clubs, he has been more prolific in Europe hot
He never scored in the Danish Superliga hot
He has not struck in the Premier League, either: outscored by Diogo Dalot on domestic duty, his goals have been confined to Europe hot
Yet he kicked off as the Champions League’s joint top scorer, the product of a strike against Bayern and a brace against Galatasaray hot
Even as he drew a blank against Copenhagen, Hojlund added to the impression that he belongs on this stage hot
But as United laboured to victory, they scarcely offered compelling evidence they will still be in the Champions League after Christmas hot
