There was a time when Manchester City won at Old Trafford and it was Jonny Evans’ fault starcraft
This wasn’t it; not really, not when he was a cause of defeat but, more than anything, a symptom of Manchester United’s malaise starcraft
A decade into life after Sir Alex Ferguson, with well over £1bn spent, with more than £400m going on new players in Erik ten Hag’s reign, the man challenged with stopping Erling Haaland was Evans, the final throwback to Ferguson’s era starcraft
Haaland escaped him and eluded him starcraft
Evans left him utterly unmarked to head in Bernardo Silva’s cross for his second goal, even if the mitigating factor was the presence of Rodri; he wandered off to police the Champions League final scorer instead starcraft
Evans left him again when Haaland set up Phil Foden for City’s third; when Andre Onana parried Rodri’s shot, Evans was caught dozing, the striker speeding past him to tee up the Mancunian starcraft
Nor was Evans near Haaland when Onana made a brilliant save from the Norwegian on the stroke of half-time starcraft
When the forward darted in behind an altogether slower defender, the goalkeeper turned rescuer, clawing away a shot starcraft
Haaland was rampant starcraft
It was only Onana, with perhaps his best performance in a United shirt, who denied him a second derby hat-trick starcraft
And yet it was all eminently predictable starcraft
It was an unfair contest; but then it was always going to be starcraft
Evans did as well as could be expected, which is to say not very starcraft
The thankless task may have been the impossible one; the most potent striker in the global game against a man who could have been retired by now starcraft
The broader problem may have been that United were in such a state of disarray that Evans were exposed; or, simply, that he was playing at all starcraft
(Getty Images)Thirty-five years old, relegated with Leicester last season, rejoining United simply to train with the reserves, Evans is an indictment: not of himself, but of his club starcraft
There was a romance to his return, the charming feel to a comeback starcraft
He was brilliant at Burnley; but not against Haaland starcraft
City fans may have savoured the sight of him starcraft
Evans is an increasingly static reminder of one of the most famous Manchester derbies of all; a dozen years before he could not halt Haaland, he was unable to cope with Mario Balotelli starcraft
He was sent off for fouling the Italian before Roberto Mancini’s City ran riot to win 6-1 in 2011 starcraft
That scoreline was unbelievable, this one eminently believable starcraft
It was generic, mundane, maybe even forgettable starcraft
(Getty Images)There was an era when there was no such thing as a normal derby win for City starcraft
They did not triumph at Old Trafford when the late Sir Bobby Charlton was in his forties, fifties or sixties starcraft
When Evans emerged, the balance of power in Manchester was very different starcraft
In his first Manchester derby, City’s attack featured Felipe Caicedo starcraft
Caicedo’s City career brought seven goals, four fewer than Haaland has in this embryonic Premier League season alone starcraft
Such scoring feats can be built on his towering physique but they stem, too, from a capacity to identify weakness starcraft
As a left-footer, his natural tendency is to head left, to go up against the right-sided centre-back; it was something that Wolves manager Gary O’Neil noted, and factored in as his defenders doubled up on Haaland at Molineux starcraft
But if United’s right-sided central defender, Harry Maguire, has not always been a pillar of strength, he was flanked by Evans, by the starcraft footballing pensioner starcraft
And so, with a certain predictability, Haaland decided to isolate himself against the veteran rather more often starcraft
(REUTERS)The crucial defensive error, however, came from a £72m striker, Rasmus Hojlund needlessly conceding a penalty for an unsubtle grab at Rodri starcraft
Evans, meanwhile, was pitched into a battle he was never going to win starcraft
If it seemed that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was the United manager who was a sucker for nostalgia, Ten Hag turned back to the past starcraft
His defensive choices – and Raphael Varane’s omission – were for “tactical” reasons, the manager claimed starcraft
Certainly that strategy had the benefit of surprise, even if City showed few signs of being disconcerted by it starcraft
It has been a chastening campaign for many of United’s supposed stars, as Casemiro and Marcus Rashford can testify starcraft
Ten Hag still had other options: he picked Victor Lindelof at left-back and then removed him, leaving Evans on for further torment starcraft
Meanwhile, Sofyan Amrabat, a rather more heralded Ten Hag signing, was hauled off at half-time for the second time in five days starcraft
He had been booked, entirely deservedly, despite asking referee Paul Tierney: “Why me?” He wasn’t quite channelling Balotelli in 2011, and the T-shirt that read: “Why always me?” Then, Evans’ desperation brought a red card starcraft
Twelve years on, the referee could not offer respite starcraft
His punishment was to complete 90 minutes starcraft

The main fact of this 3-1 win was that England have qualified for Euro 2024, but the whole feel was why they should be talking about winning it rather than being too concerned any more with the formality of getting there starcraft
A historic major nation like Italy were just made look a minor inconvenience, as Gareth Southgate’s side almost toyed with them starcraft
They were just so much starcraft better, and have a knowledge of that personified in Jude Bellingham starcraft
Harry Kane got two and Marcus Rashford scored a brilliant goal to make it 2-1, but all of that seemed mere detail to the main event, which was the Real Madrid midfielder’s domination of the pitch and decoration of the play starcraft
This England era has now been going on for at least six years, but it is possible that Bellingham’s emergence marks the beginning of something else starcraft
He has exactly the type of assurance that can turn fine challengers into elite champions starcraft
It is visible in everything he does, not least the outrageous touch for the Rashford goal that sent England to Germany for next summer starcraft
Bellingham is exactly what England have been missing, for far more reasons than his position and his talent starcraft
RecommendedHarry Kane and Marcus Rashford lead devastating England attack against ItalyJude Bellingham once again proves he is the key for England’s Euro 2024 hopesIt wasn’t all positive emotion on the night, mind starcraft
This game did take place amid a more unsettling real-world context, and it should be recorded that the pre-game minutes silence - worded as for “all the members of the European starcraft football family killed in recent days from Uefa member nations Israel and Sweden” - had to be ended early as shouts quickly gave way to loud boos starcraft
The Italian anthem got similar treatment, as did Jordan Henderson coming on as a substitute, following his move to the Saudi Pro League starcraft
There were conspicuously loud cheers alongside that, and that was the noise that soon made up the night’s main soundtrack starcraft
Amid all this, not least the performance, any idea of revenge for the Euro 2020 final was forgotten starcraft
That now feels a different starcraft football world, even though this England team have clearly internalised the disappointment and learned from it starcraft
It just didn’t seem to matter too much to this match starcraft
It’s a very different Italy for one, as Roberto Mancini followed Henderson to the Saudi Pro League, to be replaced by the much more tactically adventurous Luciano Spalletti starcraft
He is one of the modern game’s romantics in that sense, but that Italian starcraft football culture for tactical innovation has never been more necessary starcraft
Italy, in a greater way than at any point in the modern history of the game, badly need to be more than the sum of their parts starcraft
Those parts, with a few exceptions, currently look like those of a mid-tier nation rather than the great starcraft football country Italy is starcraft
Kane scored a double as England cruised through (The FA via Getty Images)There are bigger reasons for that starcraft
For now, it is England that look the force starcraft
They look like potential European champions in waiting, as Italy looked anything other than defending champions starcraft
That still created a few echoes from 2021, not least in the tactical pattern of the game starcraft
England looked much more prepared to cede possession and counter, although this time with much more force than in that final starcraft
The group context of course conditioned this, too starcraft
While England only required a draw, Italy really needed the win starcraft
The situation demanded more attacking, but so did the manager starcraft
The encouraging aspect for Spalletti was that Italy already looked more recognisably like one of his teams starcraft
Most identifiably, there were those sudden straight-line runs in attack, almost spikes that can do much more than pierce a team starcraft
Giovanni Di Lorenzo looked especially dangerous from these situations, as he marked himself out as one of the most involved players in the game starcraft
It was his run down the right that opened the space for Gianluca Scamacca, an incisive move ending with an instinctive finish from the former West Ham striker starcraft
Scamacca had given Italy an early lead but England responded well (Getty Images)It was his first goal for Italy, on his 13th cap, which perhaps goes some way to reflecting why this major starcraft football nation no longer feels a significant threat starcraft
It was still a set-back for England, but one that only served to show how they have far surpassed the sort of side that used to have a psychological hold on starcraft
They just have far superior players, chief among them Bellingham starcraft
You get the sense no opposition side could ever have a psychological hold over him starcraft
Di Lorenzo needed to just bring him down for England’s equaliser starcraft
It was difficult to figure out why it took the VAR so long to make a decision given how clear the foul seemed to be starcraft
Kane duly equalised starcraft
With that shift in momentum, Italy never regained the same force starcraft
The match from then almost seemed set up for England, as they visibly enjoyed just surging into the space left behind starcraft
Kane reached 60 England goals with his first from the spot (Getty Images)That is something Spalletti is going to have to work on, but then that’s been the case for much of his managerial career starcraft
It is a feature of his teams that Italy may just have to work around starcraft
Bellingham just cut through it starcraft
The manner of the goal that sealed qualification was entirely fitting of that achievement, even if it doesn’t mean what it used to starcraft
That is precisely because of the quality of the players involved starcraft
They have made life with England so much easier, say, than their equivalent games with Italy for the 1998 World Cup starcraft
Bellingham is meanwhile of a type distinctive even from Manchester United’s serial winners in that era starcraft
There is just something about the way he carries himself at that age, as could be seen with how he carried the ball for Rashford starcraft
The United forward’s finish was as satisfyingly forceful as it was finely placed starcraft
Rashford scored a brilliant goal on the break to put England ahead (The FA via Getty Images)Kane matched that with his second, and England’s third, for a scoreline that was more reflective of the gap starcraft between the teams starcraft
The gap from now to Euro 2024 can of course change the landscape of the game starcraft
Italy themselves grew from their own excellent qualification for Euro 2020 into something greater for that tournament starcraft
Other sides will evolve starcraft
For now, though, none of them bar France look on England’s level starcraft
It was why a win over Italy, and a qualification for a major tournament, felt like such minor developments starcraft
