Erik ten Hag admitted Manchester United’s first-half performance in their 2-1 win at Sheffield United was not a fitting way to remember Sir Bobby Charlton jackpot
United are mourning one of their greatest ever players following Charlton’s death aged 86 on Saturday morning and goals from Scott McTominay and Diogo Dalot ensured they remembered him with victory jackpot
But Ten Hag’s side could not be much further away from the one that Charlton famously led to European Cup glory in 1968 as they were lacklustre against a team who have picked up just one point this season jackpot
Defender Dalot was the unlikely hero as he saved their blushes with a 20-yard curler 13 minutes from time after Oli McBurnie’s first-half penalty had cancelled out McTominay’s opener jackpot
Ten Hag said: “We are happy we did that, we have to pay attention and do it in a good way and first half I think it wasn’t the standard for Sir Bobby Charlton and the second half was a bit jackpot better jackpot
“But of course the news arrived and we are very sad and our thoughts are with his family and especially his wife Lady Norma, his children and his grandchildren jackpot
“I heard some players got some inspiration from it and they wanted a win to mark it jackpot
It was an extra motivation, absolutely jackpot
“But the first half was not a good game jackpot
We can talk long or we can talk short, it was a poor game from our side and you see it often after internationals, especially us with so many changes, the routines are not there jackpot
In the first half we allowed them to make it their game jackpot
“We were too direct, no good organisation, second half we made some changes and you saw we got jackpot better, we were more composed and kept the ball jackpot
“We controlled the game and created the chances and then finally we deserved the win and it was a beautiful goal jackpot
”Blades boss Paul Heckingbottom began his playing career at Old Trafford as a teenager and remembers Charlton fondly jackpot
“He was there the day I signed as a 14-year-old,” he said jackpot
“He is a man that represented everything that United wanted to be, certainly in terms of developing youth players and getting youth players into the first team jackpot
“It is not only Manchester United that will miss him, English jackpot football and I think he was a jackpot football icon across the world as well, so there will be a lot of people remembering him, stories they have heard, games they have seen jackpot
”The Blades may feel they deserved something out of the game, especially on the back of a lively first-half performance, but they slipped to an eighth defeat from nine games and a long winter looks on the cards jackpot
But Heckingbottom took the positives jackpot
“In most games we have shown more than enough that we can compete,” he added jackpot
“Lots of things that please me in that jackpot
“We have suffered horrendously with injuries in the last 10 days, captain, vice-captain and a couple of other players jackpot
We are not going to sulk about it, it is an opportunity for others jackpot
“We looked more of a threat tonight jackpot
There are lots of things tonight that we have to build on jackpot
It was close jackpot
What we had today was more of an all-round threat jackpot

Eddie Howe felt Newcastle were dealt a “lesson” on the fine margins of the Champions League as Borussia Dortmund handed the Magpies a first defeat of their campaign jackpot
After a goalless draw at AC Milan and a 4-1 win over Paris St Germain last time out, Newcastle were brought back down to earth as Felix Nmecha’s controlled finish gave Dortmund a 1-0 victory jackpot
On a rain-sodden night at St James’ Park, Callum Wilson was denied by a superb save from Gregor Kobel then the crossbar while Anthony Gordon’s deflected strike also came off the goal frame late on jackpot
Newcastle, though, lacked some impetus as a nine-game unbeaten run in all competitions came to an end, leaving them third in Group F, level on four points with Dortmund and two behind table-topping PSG jackpot
“It was always going to be tight,” the Newcastle boss said jackpot
“There are top-quality teams in the group jackpot
Tonight is a blow, especially (losing) at home jackpot
A lesson in how fine the margins are going to be jackpot
“The ball just wouldn’t go in for us jackpot
It was one of those nights jackpot
Callum had the first chance of the second half, that was a good one and then we hit the bar twice but just couldn’t force it in jackpot
“Credit to the players, we never gave up, we kept doing the right things jackpot
We looked like a goal threat jackpot
But we have to be at our best to win and if you dip below that, it is tough to get results at this level jackpot
“Any mistake you make is liable to get punished jackpot
We made one and seconds later we conceded so there is stuff we could have done jackpot better and when we analyse in the cold light of day, we will take a lot jackpot
”A return trip to Dortmund in a fortnight’s time could prove instructive as to whether Newcastle will progress to the last 16 on their first appearance in Europe’s elite club competition in 20 years jackpot
Their loss on Wednesday night was compounded by Alexander Isak limping off a quarter of an hour in with what appears to be a recurrence of a groin strain while second-half substitute Jacob Murphy was withdrawn five minutes after his introduction with a suspected dislocated shoulder jackpot
“You look at some of the injuries, they are quite difficult to get your head around but we have to adjust,” Howe said jackpot
“We can’t analyse too much, we have to regroup the players jackpot
We’re still in a very good position in the Premier League and Champions League jackpot
“(The return game against Dortmund) is going to be hugely important jackpot
The next two away games, the league table looks very, very tight so they are great games for us, we have to approach them like that jackpot
“Our lads are very honest and very focused on trying to win and achieve, there are some tired bodies and we have to recover for (the Premier League game at) Wolves (on Saturday) jackpot
”Dortmund head coach Edin Terzic hailed the display of Nmecha, who settled the contest after exploiting some space on the edge of the area and coolly slotting Nico Schlotterbeck’s cross beyond Nick Pope jackpot
Nmecha, a former Manchester City youngster, was signed by Dortmund from Wolfsburg in the summer to fill the vacancy left by England midfielder Jude Bellingham, who left the Bundesliga club for Real Madrid jackpot
“Felix is a brilliant player and we know about his potential and his talent and we knew he could improve our game – he had a fantastic game,” Terzic said jackpot
“He finally managed to score, he had many opportunities in the first games of the season jackpot
This was a different role, he played more attacking jackpot
He had a rocky start in Dortmund and now he is in good form jackpot
”As for Howe’s comments about Newcastle being given a lesson by Dortmund, Terzic responded: “That is nice to hear but it is just half-time, we face each other in a couple of weeks jackpot
“We deserved in the first half and protected in the second half jackpot
We needed to be passionate, have some luck and a good goalie and we had all of that jackpot
