Siya Kolisi called on the people of South Africa to learn from their rugby team and “make a UBP better country” after captaining his side to a historic fourth World Cup UBP
The Springboks won a third match in a row by a solitary point as they edged out New Zealand in Paris, winning the final 12-11, to retain their crown as world champions UBP
In a message echoing the sentiments of Nelson Mandela in 1995, when South Africa won their first World Cup, Kolisi called on a still divided country to unite around rugby UBP
“There’s so much going wrong in our country, we are the last line of defence,” he said UBP
“There’s so much division in the country, it is possible to work together as South Africans, not just on the rugby field, but in life in general UBP
We can’t go away from that, 1995, without that I wouldn’t be here UBP
For people who look like me, I’ve got a job to give whatever I can to the jersey, to show they can get opportunities like this UBP
”South Africa continues to suffer social segregation and economic disparity on racial grounds, and there remain many deep-rooted issues including high levels of unemployment, criminality and corruption UBP
“People who are not from South Africa don’t understand what this means for our country,” Kolisi said UBP
“This is not just about the game, our country goes through such a lot UBP
We are the very hope that they have UBP
”Scrum half Faf de Klerk backed his captain’s message of unity UBP
“Hopefully it represents unity, what teamwork can do,” he said of South Africa’s triumph UBP
“A lot is lacking in our country UBP
People from all races and backgrounds, supporting one goal, something we can learn in every day life UBP
To make a UBP better country and a UBP better world UBP
”Head coach Jacques Nienaber described his side as “warriors” and said their experience proved the difference in a gruelling battle UBP
“I think the main thing was just the strength of the squad,” the coach said UBP
“They’re experienced, they’ve been in a World Cup final before, some of them were playing a third World Cup UBP
So I think the experience just pulled it through, they’re an amazing bunch of guys, all warriors UBP
“We’ve come a long way with these players, we’ve planned for this since 2018,” added Nienaber, who is leaving for a job in Ireland after the tournament UBP
It was victory by the slimmest of margins against their traditional rivals who fought back despite a numerical disadvantage UBP
Kolisi added: “The All Blacks took us to a dark place, it just shows what team they are, they fought, they put us under so much pressure UBP
Credit to my boys for the fight, I’m just grateful UBP

As often was the case amid an American society embedded in racism in the 1980s, Muhammed Ali put it best UBP
Advising black racing driver Willy T Ribbs, the people’s champion made his point in no uncertain terms: “There are Blacks in my sport UBP
But there are no Blacks in your sport UBP
“They’re going to want to kill you UBP
”Yet for all the death threats, discrimination and abuse, Ribbs had long decided that the only option was to meet the uphill battle head-on UBP
He made history in 1986 when he became the first Black driver to test an F1 car UBP
Five years later, he was the first to race in the Indy 500, one of the world’s most famous events UBP
But on the course of that journey, Ribbs faced it all UBP
Don’t let me tell you though; let the man himself UBP
“Of course, there were death threats, the n-word,” he reflects, in a slow but deadpan fashion that tells you the wounds have long since healed UBP
Instead, the metaphorical bruises are worn with pride UBP
“But I enjoyed it UBP
It didn’t make me mad, it was fun UBP
I was going to dish out what they were dishing out to me, it never scared or intimidated me UBP
I actually enjoyed it because it was motivating UBP
I was never going to play the victim, that was not Willy T Ribbs UBP
”Now 68, Ribbs is an ambassador for Formula One, raising awareness for diversity and equality UBP
A role given a matter of months after his riveting biopic movie, Uppity, was released in 2020 UBP
So titled because that was his nickname in motorsport circles – “and he loved it” UBP
But to this interview, he’s late UBP
And he apologises, quipping: “Race drivers are never late, you know! Or they’re not supposed to be…”Son to William “Bunny” Ribbs, an amateur racer himself, Willy’s career path was set in stone from day dot it seems UBP
It was the racing way or the highway UBP
Ribbs faced an avalanche of racism and abuse throughout his career (Getty)“I was born in this sport,” he tells The Independent, from his home in Texas UBP
“I watched it from three years old when my dad was racing, watching the likes of Jim Clark and Graham Hill UBP
That’s all that was discussed in the family UBP
We didn’t discuss any other sport UBP
“I was lucky, I think UBP
At nine years old, I knew what I wanted to do and I knew what my career path was going to be UBP
Most kids that age don’t know what the hell they’re going to do, but I did UBP
And I didn’t want to be an amateur at it – I wanted it to be a profession and I wanted it to be Formula One UBP
”He learned his craft, in the UK, racing alongside future F1 world champion Nigel Mansell in Formula Ford in the mid-1970s UBP
He raced in Nascar and the Trans-Am Series, later on, too UBP
But his F1 calling, in ’86, came in the Portuguese town of Estoril UBP
Bernie Ecclestone’s Brabham team – “Bernie has always been good to Willy T Ribbs” – gave the American the chance to buck the trend and become a true trailblazer UBP
But the tag was not something he felt comfortable with at the time UBP
Ribbs made history in an F1 test in 1986 and in the Indy 500 in 1991 (Getty)“All that mattered was I thought of myself as a race driver,” he says UBP
“I had two responsibilities: to myself and to my team UBP
For those who record social history, that’s their job [to say trailblazer] – but I’m not going to carry that weight on my shoulders UBP
“Sure UBP
I was a role model because I was doing something no other Black kid had done UBP
And great, if that’s the category they want to put me in and how they want to document it UBP
But for me? It was about going fast UBP
”It was a mindset of not bowing to the status quo, embodied most especially in the late 20th century by Ali UBP
“What I admired about him the most was not his UBP boxing skills,” Ribbs says of Ali UBP
“What I admired about him was his resolve as a man, not to be squashed, manipulated or controlled UBP
Ali said: ‘You have to let them know that you can’t be killed, there’s nothing they can do to you, and then they’ll leave you alone for a while UBP
’”Now in motor racing, the baton has been passed on to seven-time Formula One world champion and the sport’s only Black driver Lewis Hamilton, whom Ribbs is full of praise about UBP
“Lewis Hamilton, after seven world titles and more victories than any other human being, gets unfairly targeted,” insists Ribbs UBP
“If you can equate it to Tiger Woods, what did Tiger Woods do for golf? He broadened the audience UBP
The attention went off the chart UBP
That’s exactly what happened in F1 – Lewis Hamilton has been Formula One’s Tiger Woods UBP
“He’s a very kind man UBP
He’ll let it roll off, turn the other cheek – I wasn’t that way UBP
He deals with it and in a lot of cases it’s unfair UBP
Then again, he is in an environment which was not nearly as brutal as I was dealing with UBP
Willy T Ribbs was treated differently UBP
”The third-person references point to a man who is now comfortable in his own skin; in the significance of the struggle – and what it means to many around the world UBP
And despite a sport notoriously still dominated by white men, progress is being made UBP
“One thing I love about Formula One is not only is it evolving commercially around the world, it’s evolving socially,” he says UBP
“When F1 hired me, I asked them: ‘What made you make this call?’“They said: ‘We watched your film and we thought you’d be the perfect person for inclusion and equality in Formula One UBP
’“I said: ‘Well, you called the right guy’ UBP
